Résumé

2006 a été une année délicate pour les Frères musulmans et leur bilan est mitigé. D’une part, ils ont réussi à capitaliser leur incroyable performance lors des élections de 2005, avec une progression du nombre de leurs membres, jusqu’à atteindre une masse critique, et faisant, à plus d’une occasion, des sorties remarquées au Parlement. D’autre part, ils ont pris un virage radical à droite, donnant des munitions à ceux qui pensaient que leur supposé aggiornamento n’était rien de plus qu’une posture. L’auteur soutient que des contraintes organisationnelles et idéologiques, l’interaction avec d’autres acteurs des champs politique et religieux, ainsi que la nécessité d’une stratégie visant à augmenter et à consolider son hégémonie sur ce dernier champ, sont des variables cruciales pour comprendre la logique interne des actions et discours de la confrérie.

Muslim Brotherhood : On the (Good ?) Use of Conflict

Abstract

2006 was a delicate year for the Muslim Brotherhood, and the record is mixed. On one hand, they succeeded in capitalizing on their incredible performance during the 2005 elections, as their membership progressed, reaching a critical mass, and they also made more often than not a strong showing in the parliament. On the other hand, the Brotherhood took a radical turn to the right, giving ammunition to those who think that their supposed aggiornamento is no more than a posture. This writer argues that ideological and organizational constraints, as well as interaction with other actors of the political and religious fields, and the needs of a strategy aimed at gaining and consolidating hegemony in this latter field, are crucial variables if we want to understand the inner logic of the Brotherhood’s actions and discourses.
